Storm chaser Brian Emfinger tells CNN that Thursday's tornado cut through some of the main sections of Perryton, Texas. Emfinger said the worst he saw was in the northwest part of town. People there had little warning as the tornado touched down, barreling toward a mobile home park directly in its path, he said. “The storm produced a wall cloud very quickly, and that wall cloud tightened up very rapidly and then it just went to the ground very quickly,” Emfinger said. Usually with a strong tornado, there’s a lot of leeway time for people to prepare, he said.

States across the South were assessing storm damage on Friday after a series of tornadoes swept across the region, leaving at least four people dead, including three in Texas, the authorities said. He told CNN that one person died in the trailer park and two others died downtown, and that one person was missing. About 200 homes and the town firehouse were destroyed, and infrared-equipped drones were surveying the damage, he said. Officials in Perryton, about 115 miles northeast of Amarillo, Texas, could not immediately be reached for comment. The Perryton Fire Department said on Facebook late Thursday that the fire station “took a direct hit,” but that its trucks and ambulances were still operable.

A combination of high humidity and temperatures above 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius)could push heat index values above 115 in some parts of the South this weekend, contributing to atmospheric instability and creating conditions ripe for more harsh storms, weather service meteorologist Matt Mosier said. The agency issued excessive heat warnings affecting millions of people in parts of southern Louisiana and Texas, saying the heat index could reach 110 degrees. South Florida and Mississippi were under heat advisories for Friday. While Southern states are accustomed to high heat, extreme weather conditions have become more frequent across the country and with more intensity, driven by climate change, scientists say. At least three people were killed and dozens injured by tornadoes in Perryton, Texas, on Thursday.

It’s not unusual for officials in Texas to issue heat advisories around this time of year, said Monte Oaks, a meteorologist at the Weather Service’s San Antonio office. They typically do so when high temperatures combine with other factors, including high humidity and westerly winds that blow hot air from high-altitude deserts, he added. In this case, Mr. Oaks said, the humidity is high because Texas had a wetter and stormier spring than usual. But it also means that the hot ground is “cooking a lot of the moisture” and releasing it into the air. But there is enough supply to meet the demand, the company added, and it does not expect an “energy emergency.”Global warming is making dangerously hot weather more common, and more extreme, on every continent.
